Wet belts are so named because they are located inside the engine and are lubricated by oil, similar to a timing chain.

However, they are lighter than metal timing chains and create lower friction than the traditional external timing belt. Wet belts have now become popular with manufacturers such as Ford, Peugeot, and Citroen because their other advantages include improved fuel efficiency and reduced exhaust emissions. Designed initially with a life expectancy of around 150,000 miles, or up to ten years, it is not uncommon for wet belts to fail much sooner – sometimes as early as 30,000 miles.

Why might my wet belt fail?

Wet belts can fail prematurely for several reasons, and contaminated oil containing soot particles or other impurities is one of the most common issues. This causes deterioration of the belt leading to failure, so it’s essential to make sure the oil is changed regularly to prevent this situation.
